Banana Oatmeal Cookies

Snack time around here can be a bit monotonous. It is easy for it to become the same old same old. The kids will come home from their activities and they need food. FAST. I don’t want to load them up with a heavy snack or give them something that has too much junk in it, especially before dinner.

These simple banana oatmeal cookies are easy to make, delicious to eat and I can feel good about giving them to them. These cookies are packed with fruit and healthy fiber and the kids eat them up faster than those sugar laden cookies that you buy at the store. Add in some of your favorites, like nuts, chocolate chips, or raisins, and keep them on hand.

Are These Cookies Healthy?

These cookies are extremely healthy. Because there is only bananas and whole grain oatmeal in these cookies, you can not go wrong. When you eat oatmeal, quick cooking or old fashion oatmeal, it is a great way to get whole grain, complex carbs. That is great for energy and a quick and easy snack. You do not want to use the flavored oatmeal that comes in the small packets. This has a lot of added stuff in it, including sugar which you do not want for these cookies.

If you are looking for a breakfast cookie that the kids will love this one is my kids favorite. They also make great lunch box snacks and snacks for anytime!

How to Store Banana Oat Cookies

When I make these cookies, I like to keep them on hand. That is hard sometimes because the kids love them, so I make a large batch or double the recipe. I like to keep the cookies in an air tight container or in a freezer bag. Anything that seals well and keeps the cookies from being exposed to air. You can also wrap the banana cookies in plastic wrap. These cookies do not need to be stored in the refrigerator, although you can freeze them if you will not finish the cookies before they go bad.

Freezing Banana Oatmeal Cookies

Freezing cookies is a great way to have them on hand whenever you want cookies but don’t have time to bake them. It is also a great way to make sure the cookies do not go bad before you have a chance to eat them. I like to freeze the cookies on a plate or on a cookie sheet before placing them in the freezer bag. This lets me remove the cookies easily from the bag because they are not frozen together. The cookies can be frozen for up to 3 months.

Variations to These Cookies

These are very basic, no sugar added cookies. That is one of the things that I love about them. However, sometimes, you want to add a little something more to it. You can add different things to change these cookies up and make them even more amazing.

  • Nuts. A lot of people like nuts in their cookies. If you are one of these people, you can take any type of nut, from peanuts to pecan or walnut to even pistachios. You will want to chop these nuts into small pieces. I prefer to use a food processor but you can also chop these nuts using a knife.
  • Flavored Chips. Typically this would be chocolate chips, semi-sweet, milk, or dark chocolate chips, but you can also use strawberry chips, toffee, caramel, peanut butter chips, or anything similar. Almost any of the chocolate chip-style chips that you find in the grocery store can be used in these cookies. Peanut butter chips are my favorite because it goes perfect with bananas and with oatmeal.
  • Raisins. This is a no-brainer. Raisins in oatmeal cookies are perfect.
  • Cinnamon. Pretty much like the raisins, cinnamon goes perfect in oatmeal cookies.

You will want 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of add ins and then about a tablespoon of cinnamon if using cinnamon.
