When Dr Michael Mosley unveiled his latest diet, he described it as his “best plan ever”.
The Fast 800 diet, created by the medical journalist based on the very latest scientific findings, picks up from where Mosley’s 5:2 diet (launched back in 2012) left off. It’s a combination of intermittent fasting and the Mediterranean diet (recently voted best in the world and a favourite of our nutritionist), combined with exercise and optional meal replacement shakes.
All-new The Fast 800 plan
There’s a big focus on calorie counting during the rapid weight loss phase with Dr Mosley’s latest diet. He claims that 800 calories is the “magic number when it comes to successful weight loss”. He revealed in the Daily Mail: “The latest scientific findings show the health and weight benefits of intermittent fasting along with a dietary approach that promotes rapid weight loss.” The Fast 800 followers are encouraged to restrict themselves to 800 calories per day for a minimum of two weeks, but can follow this plan for longer. The idea is to tailor the diet to your own needs – you can just do the 5:2 component or you can follow the more intense 800-calories-a-day plan for up to 12 weeks.
How can The Fast 800 diet help you?
Foods that are high in sugar and carbs put us at risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity and can cause spikes in our blood sugar levels. Shortly after eating, these drop rapidly, leaving us hungry for more food. The Fast 800 diet recommends lower-carb, higher-fat meals packed with essential nutrients and protein and fibre that keep you feeling fuller for longer, improve blood sugar levels and help you lose weight.

Time Restricted Eating
Followers of The Fast 800 should also aim to have an overnight fast each day, where they go for 12 hours without eating. Mosley calls this “Time Restricted Eating”. For example, you might eat dinner at 7pm but you then should avoid eating until 7am the following morning.
Meal replacement shakes
Mosley admits that The Fast 800 is the first time he’s decided to include meal replacement shakes. These aren’t the old-school shakes people used to buy in the chemist, but homemade drinks and packed with nutritious ingredients. With each shake worth 200 calories, you can fill up quickly, easily (and even on the run) on healthy plant-based fats, vitamins and other essential nutrients. Although they’re not a compulsory part of The Fast 800 plan, Dr Mosley says that they’re great to “keep you feeling full and encourage fat burning”. He insists you mustn’t just rely on shakes for your calories and shouldn’t stay on them for too long.
The 5:2 diet phase
After 14 days on The Fast 800, you’re encouraged to “transition” to a new iteration of his 5:2 diet, aiming for 800 calories per day at least 2 days a week, with a 14-hour fast overnight.
The Fast 800 Online Programme: everything you need to know
The Fast 800 offers a flexible approach to healthy living which includes intermittent fasting methods, depending on your health goals. The Fast 800 rapid weight loss approaches can help individuals who are currently obese or overweight lose weight quickly and maintain a healthy weight, using intermittent fasting practices. However, if you don’t have much weight to lose, we recommend starting on The New 5:2 approach or The Way of Life approach, with TRE alongside for the added benefits.
Following Dr Michael Mosley’s diet plan is easy when you have the right support. The Fast 800 Online Programme provides you with the tools and knowledge to achieve your goals, no matter which approach you are following.
The Fast 800 Online Programme provides daily meal plans for whichever approach is most suited to you, with options for three meals a day, or two meals a day for those wanting to extend their TRE to the 16:8 method. As a member of the programme, you also have access to daily workout videos and Health Coach and community support, as you need it.
Does The Fast 800 diet work?
While he was developing the program, Dr Mosley took several months to gain more than 6kg. After starting the plan, he admits that at times his “energy levels felt lower” during those two weeks, but found the 5:2 phase that followed “surprisingly easy”. He lost almost 5kg in just 2 weeks. He of course recommends that you seek advice from your doctor before embarking on this or any other restrictive diet, as it may not be suitable for everyone.
