Apple Fritters

These homemade apple fritters are made right on the kitchen stove in a simple skillet and some oil. They are soft and sweet on the inside and crunchy on the outside.

Ingredients You Need

  • Apples. You’ll need two large apples and we prefer Granny Smith for these.
  • Flour. All purpose.
  • Sugar. To sweeten.
  • Baking Powder.
  • Salt.
  • Milk.Whichever kind of milk you like.
  • Cinnamon. For flavor.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce. For extra apple flavor.
  • Vegetable Oil. For frying.

Donut Glaze Ingredients

I just love a simple powdered sugar glaze! Three ingredients, made fast and it’s so easy. Plus, it can go on just about anything.

How To Make Apple Fritters

  1. Dry Ingredients. In a bowl, stir the dry ingredients.
  2. Add Wet Ingredients. Stir in the milk and applesauce next.
  3. Apples. Dice up your apples into small bites and fold them into the batter.
  4. Fry. Heat oil in the skillet to about 375 degrees. Then, drop the batter in 1/3 scoops for 2 minutes on each side. Let them cool on a rack while you make the glaze.
  5. Glaze. Stir the three glaze ingredients together and dip each fritter in. Let the excess drip and enjoy.

These are most certainly the best tasting when they are warm and fresh! Serve them in the morning with your cup of coffee or a cool glass of milk.

Can you Bake these Apple Fritters?

Yes you can, BUT I would not recommend baking. You will get the best results with frying this recipe.

Tips:

  • Heat – Use a thermometer to make sure the oil is at the correct temperature making sure the tip is not touching the bottom of the pan.
  • Fry – I fry in batched. Add in 3 fritters at a time. This will prevent crowding and helps with any undercooked issues.
  • Color – The darker the fritters the crisper the they’ll be.
  • Rest –Let your fritters rest on a wire rack after a minute on a paper towel. This will help keep them crisp.

FAQs

Why are my apple fritters not crispy? ›

Best tips for apple fritters:

Use two spoons to drop the batter into the oil and spread gently. If you drop a scoop of batter into the oil, the outside will be crispy and the center will be raw. To make them really crispy, I prefer to fry them until they are dark brown not just golden brown.

Is pancake batter the same as fritter batter? ›

A fritter batter is a muffin batter without butter (fat). How does pancake batter fit in? Right in the middle of the two because it use 1/2 part fat, but keeps the other core components the same. These all fall under the quick bread family, which use baking powder or soda as a leavener.

Why are my homemade apple fritters soggy? ›

Why are my apple fritters soggy? This is most likely the result of oil temperature. If your oil is too cool, your fritters will take a long time to fry and will end up greasy.

Why are my fritters not crispy? ›

The most common causes for soggy fritters are too much batter (basic flour and egg batter like used in pancakes will never cook up crispy), and whatever you're frittering leeches too much water when cooking.

What makes batter more crispy? ›

Rice flour and cornstarch work particularly well because they fry up crispier than wheat flour. They also absorb less moisture and fat during the frying process, making the products less greasy. This is why rice flour is often used when making tempura because it produces a very thin and crispy, dry crust.

Does baking soda make fritters crispy? ›

Is baking soda or powder best for frying? A pinch of baking soda can help produce crispy fried foods. It reacts with the acid in the batter to create carbon dioxide bubbles. These lead to an airy batter and a crisper, fluffier result.

How can I thicken my fritter batter? ›

Adding flour to a wetter batter will give you the thick consistency you want. Add crumbled stock cubes for a flavourful kick! Add as little or as much as you like (or none at all), depending on the flavour you want.

What is a British fritter? ›

A fritter is a fried food. The food is a portion of batter or breading. It is filled with either meat, seafood, vegetables or fruit. In the United Kingdom, fritters can be with fish and chips. There is also a food item, like an apple ring or a slice of potato.

Why are apple fritters unhealthy? ›

Apple fritters are among the unhealthiest doughnuts. Just because a doughnut has fruit it it doesn't mean it is a good choice. Apple fritters are deep fried in fat. A medium sized apple fritter contains approximately 17 grams of fat (almost half the fat from saturated fat) and 450 calories.

Why do you put lemon juice over the apples when making an apple crisp? ›

Add a little extra fresh lemon juice to help prevent the apples from turning super brown. Prepare the entire apple crisp, cover well, and refrigerate the night before baking. Don't wait any longer than overnight before baking, to prevent the apples from browning too much or drying out/spoiling.

Why are my apple fritters greasy? ›

The oil temperature is important!

I like to cook my Bourbon Apple Fritters at about 350°. If the oil is too hot, the outside will burn and the inside will be under-cooked. If the oil is not hot enough, the fritters will absorb a lot of oil and will be greasy.

Which type of cooking method is used for fritters? ›

While baking the fritters may seem like a more wholesome choice, I encourage you to fry them. Frying ensures you'll get that extra-crispy exterior, which is the sign of a great fritter. Plus, these are shallow-fried, rather than deep-fried, in just a couple of tablespoons of oil.

Why are my fritters like pancakes? ›

Note: Some fritters recipes are more pancake than loosely-held-together fritter patty, one where it's important you eliminate a lot of water. For those pancake-style fritters, a loose, moist batter may be preferable. Most recipes will explicitly call for wringing moisture from ingredients if that's necessary.

What raising agent is used in fritters? ›

There are a lot of recipes for apple fritters that use baking powder or soda, which is a chemical rising agent, to make the dough rise.

Why are my fritters soft? ›

When frying, work in batches and avoid sticking the fritters too close together in the pan. If they are too close, they'll create steam which will make them too soft. Use hot oil! Don't add the fritters to the pan until the oil is nice and hot.

Why is my apple crisp always dry? ›

Not enough butter, and your topping will be a dry, floury mess. Too much butter and your topping will become a greasy blob or disappointingly soggy. Some recipes will ask you to cut in cold butter along with your dry ingredients, resulting in pea-size pieces that are sprinkled across the hot fruit filling.

What makes apples so crispy? ›

Bursting with crunch

Each of the small juice-packed cells is stuck to each other. When you bite into a crunchy apple the individual cell walls rupture and the juice is released from the sack, so you get an instant sweet juicy hit. The amount of crunch is controlled by the cell walls that glue the cells together.
